Nature's Sculpture

Artwork Shaped by weather and time

Time spent in nature draws us into encounters with beauty, from the tiny orange newts in the leaf duff along a trail to towering pines standing as sentinels on the edge of a wilderness lake. This beauty can also be formed by the natural forces that slowly shape the landscape and the living things that grow there. For years the trees lying broken and decaying were simply obstacles in my way, something to step over or find a way around in my travels through the wooods. Then one autumn afternoon a fallen tree whose roots stood high above the forest floor like a great gray lacework wall caused me to pause, silent and transfixed, caught up in a fleeting moment of beauty. It was the offering of this artwork, created and given at the very end of life that inspired me to begin to collect other encounters with these examples of nature's sculpture.

The images offered in this series are truly unique pieces of art, created only by the forces of nature, ever changing and never to be seen or recorded in these exact ways again.
